Office Built-ins

I wanted a dark office, but it was missing something. I painted the ceiling dark. It was still lacking personality. And then my husband made built in cabinets and shelving and now this space has personality.

This has been such a fun project. When we were building our home we knew this space would look best with built ins, but we ran out of time. We did a lot ourselves, so we knew we would rather build our own and save money than pay someone to build them. We always get a quote or an estimate and are like no way, we won't pay that. Our whole marriage has been let's figure out how to diy things to save money.

The paint we chose for the office is GreenBlack by Sherwin Williams. I loved the color instantly. The space was great but every time I came into the room I felt it was underwhelming. Also, my husband works from home, and his back ground on his Zoom calls were plain. The lighting also wasn't great for his calls. The desk was beautiful, but too big for the space. A lot of the furniture was from our last house, and we just made it work. I kept wondering how a dark, dramatic painted room could be underwhelming and boring.

I then looked at Pinterest and decided I needed to paint the ceiling dark. That would be dramatic and that would be what would give this room a personality. I painted the ceiling. I loved it. It was getting closer, however I still felt it was lacking personality. His Zoom calls were still lacking personality too. I tried art behind his desk, but it was just ok. I went back to Pinterest. I knew it needed the built in shelves and cabinets we had originally planned for this space. That would give interest for the background on Zoom calls. I also knew accent lighting would give more light in a dark space. Lastly, the curtains were good, but custom curtains are perfection.

Kaboondesk then reached out asking to do a collaboration with me. They had beautiful counters. All our available on Amazon and I found one called Cloud Atlas that I loved. It is like a dark stone look with beautiful veining in it. I then asked my husband if he was up for making some cabinets and shelves. He is the BEST, and immediately said sure. He built and painted the cabinets and shelves. It was $250 for everything. We then installed everything, added an accent light (I have four of them; I love them so much), and then custom curtains and shades. I worked with Three Girl Curtains for the custom curtains. They are Zenlinen, in the natural color, with pinch pleat-double. I worked with Shade It for custom shades. They are cordless Roman shades in Rio Flax plain pleat in color linen. The custom curtains and shades were helpful for Zoom calls to make the lighting just right. Some days the morning sun coming in was so bright it washed my husband out on calls. After all this thought and work, we have a room that serves its purpose perfectly. Now when I walk in I feel at peace and want to stay. I see so much beauty I want to stay and relax. That feeling makes me know we finally got this space just right.
